Rachmaninov – Kolokola (Clocks)
Recording September 18, 2015 for avrotros Friday Concert in Tivoli Vredenburg, Utrecht.

Russian bells
In Russia before the revolution sounded everywhere chiming. Not dark brown, as solemn chiming of the Utrecht Domklokken, but more mottled carillon-like sound of bells and bells which were played with a network of strings by a single player. The young Sergei Rachmaninov everywhere heard bells. In his Kolokola he evokes bygone times of ancient Russia. ‘Clocks accompanied every Russian, from his childhood to the grave, and no composer could escape their influence, I do not. “In Kolokola they come in all shapes and sizes over, the jingle of silver sleigh bells and festive bells around the marriage, the inexorable death knell.
