Ceaikovski ’ s “Variații Rococo” by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra led by Min Jaap van Zweden and cellist Floris My managers.
It’s an interesting question what Tchaikovsky meant by rococo or what so Mozartian is the intimate and charming work for cello and orchestra that he composed in December 1876 for the German cellist Wilhelm Fitzenhagen, as he taught at the Moscow Conservatory . Not much. The compact orchestra of Mozartian size, but the theme of Tchaikovsky himself. The coquettish-lyrical atmosphere of this one-piece mini concert in variation form is pronounced nineteenth century, and especially typical Tchaikovsky. Ceaikovski ’ s “Rococo” is perhaps not so much a stijlpastiche as the expression of an escapist desire for a graceful, conflict-free world without the oppressive tensions in his last three symphonies, sometimes coarse violence would depreciate.
