Im Sommer 1967, Andrew Lloyd Webber wurde von Alan Doggett gefragt., Leiter des Fachbereichs Musik in Colet court, St Paul’s Junior School who taught his younger brother, Julian, to write a ‘pop cantata’ for the school choir to sing at their Easter end of term concert.
Andrew näherte sich sofort seinen Freund Tim Rice zu Fragen, ob er Texte für das Projekt zu schreiben würde. Nach liebäugelt mit Ideen über Spione, 007′s and the like, Tim schlug die Geschichte von Josef.
