Au cours de l’été 1967, Andrew Lloyd Webber a été posée par Alan Doggett, chef du département musique à la Cour de Colet, St Paul’s Junior School who taught his younger brother, Julian, to write a ‘pop cantata’ for the school choir to sing at their Easter end of term concert.
Andrew a immédiatement contacté son ami Tim Rice pour demander si il écrirait des paroles pour le projet. Après avoir jouer avec des idées sur les espions, 007′s and the like, Tim a proposé l’histoire de Joseph.
