U ljeto 1967, Andrew Lloyd Webber je zamoljen od strane Alan Doggett, šef odjela za glazbu u Colet sud, St Paul’s Junior School who taught his younger brother, Julian, to write a ‘pop cantata’ for the school choir to sing at their Easter end of term concert.
Andrew je odmah prišao njegov prijatelj Tim Rice pitati ako je napisati tekst za projekt. Nakon toying s idejama o špijunima, 007′s and the like, Tim predložio priča o Josipu.
