In de zomer van 1967, Andrew Lloyd Webber werd gevraagd door Alan Doggett, hoofd van de afdeling muziek bij Colet Hof, St Paul’s Junior School who taught his younger brother, Julian, to write a ‘pop cantata’ for the school choir to sing at their Easter end of term concert.
Andrew benaderde onmiddellijk zijn vriend Tim Rice om te vragen of hij teksten voor het project zou schrijven. Na het spelen met ideeën over spionnen, 007′s and the like, Tim voorgesteld het verhaal van Jozef.
