Tchaikovsky’s “Manfred Symphony” by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra led by Min Jaap van Zweden. GO FOR RELEASE INCLUDING BACKGROUND ON-MANFRED SYMPHONY FOR: https://youtu.be/-LFw74Yyxjg.
The basis for Tchaikovsky’s “Manfred Symphony” is a poem by Lord Byron. The protagonist struggles with himself, tormented by a forbidden love. In the rustic alpine he tries to find peace and answers. Tchaikovsky also found inspiration for this work in the Alps. His Manfred symphony, rarely performed but a favorite of Jaap van Zweden, is full of extremes. Between drama and tranquility. Among the picturesque nature and man with all his sins. Between despair and, ultimately, hope.
